Pads Looking At Familiar Faces

The San Diego Padres are desperate for bodies in the outfield, and all MLB GM's know it. According to an ESPN.com report, the Pads and Pirates are deep in trade talks regarding former Padres Jason Bay, and Xavier Nady. The Pirates are said to have interest in backup back stop Michael Barrett, and prized 3B prospect Chase Headley. The Pirates might also be searching for a team who wouldn't mind acquiring starting pitcher Matt Morris and his hefty $12 M contract. I wonder if this is Plan B, C, D, or Z?

Sandy Alderson was on XX Sports radio this evening and squashed this rumor. He stated that they had talks at the meeting about Bay and nothing since then. Chase Headly is untouchable unless something really significant would be offered for him. Top Padres brass would like to see what he can do in a Friar uniform rather than see him excel in another teams.

I heard that too, I am pleased that the Friars aren't using Headley to acquire Jason Bay. Nothing against Bay, I think he's a fine ball player (who would immediately become the Pads best outfielder), but he is not a CF. I have no problem with the Pads going into the season with Chase Headley as their LF, I would love to see what he can do with 500 AB's. Still the questions remain; (a) are we over valuing our prospects, and (b) who is going to be the Padres CF in '08?
