Peavy Domination Tour: Next Target Phoenix

Jake Peavy takes the mound for the Padres Monday night to kick off a 4 game series against the DBacks at Petco Park. With a single strikeout, Peavy will move past Andy Benes for the franchise record. More importantly, a sweep would put the Padres up a game in the NL West - might seem like a lot to ask, but clearly the DBacks are worried, which is why they are compensating. Bud Black's club currently holds a 3 game lead in the NL wild card race.

In the 2nd inning Peavy found himself in a jam after a leadoff double and a walk. A fly ball out left runners at the corners with one out. Jake Peavy then went to work using all his pitched striking out the final two batters swinging on a 97 mph fastball and three straight sliders to Jeff Cirillo. It was a pitching clinic that was fun to watch!

It wasn't a pitching clinic - it was a great example of the umpire calling balls 6 inches off the plate strikes. He's doing it for both sides equally, but if there's a park in the majors that doesn't need a widened strike zone, it's this one. Come on ump - the hitters have a hard enough time in San Diego already! 7 innings and 2 runs from Livan Hernandez - and those two off of a single mistake pitch with 2 outs in the 7th? If that's not an example of a ridiculously wide strike zone, I don't know what is.

As far as tonight zone being very large, I agree. However, Jake Peavy's performance not only in the second but through his 7 innings of 1 run 11 K baseball was a pitching clinic...The umpire's strike zone doesn't affect swinging strikeouts, which each of the final batters in the 2 inning were.

Oh, and if an umpire has a certain strike zone then not only is there nothing wrong with exploiting it ~ but you should attack it. Umpires, much like players have scouting reports.
